Remember my Embroidery Hoop Wall Pockets pattern from Stitch Fall 2011? You can download it for free by clicking right here.
We’ve been doing a little spring cleaning and reorganizing around here which has included my sewing area (pics to come soon), and I finally got around to hanging the samples that I made for the Stitch photo shoot. The one above hangs right behind my sewing machines, and I absolutely love how convenient it makes grabbing my little thread scissors, my handy tweezers, or even my trusty seam ripper.
Here’s the third hoop hung over my ironing table:
And the original prototype over my work table:
If you don’t hang your hoop the right way, it can be more of a pain than a helpful tool. Tara asked on the Fabric.com Facebook Page a couple of days ago for suggestions on hanging decorative embroidery hoops because hers keep blowing off the wall when her windows are open, so I thought I’d share a few quick pictures to show how I hang these pockets so that they don’t go flying across the room when you want to enjoy spring breezes or just grab your scissors! Here’s a picture of what the wall looks like behind the hoop over my machines:
Hopefully, you can see that fairly well. You can click on the picture for a larger version. I start out by measuring across the hoop about a third of the way down from the top, then I measure from the center point of that line down to the bottom of the hoop. Like this:
Using my level, I measure out and make a mark on the wall at each of those three points, then I place a small screw at each mark. You want the hoop to be pretty snug on the screws when you slide it on. These three screws hold the hoop nicely if you’re hanging simply for decoration. If you have pockets on your hoop, though, I suggest adding a nail just under the little tension-tightening screw. That nail will keep your hoop nice and straight. Of course, even with all these measures, if you lose your temper and yank that seam ripper out of the pocket hard enough, your hoop will end up in your lap, so no yanking!
It’s been really fun to watch other people take this simple little idea of mine and add their personal touch to it! Need some inspiration for making a few? Check out these:
Amy from During Quiet Time organized a Hanging Hoop Wall Pocket Swap last fall, and there were some beautiful hoops created. The stamped “Sew Happy” and the measuring tape twill trim make Amy’s hoop just perfect:
I love the patchwork that Krista at Spotted Stones pieced together for this one. What a great way to use up some of your scrap collection!
Wendy from Mama&CO embellished this hoop with lace and fabric-covered buttons, and she added a pin cushion!
Sew Peachey’s Karen used one of my favorite color combinations of aqua and red for her pieced hoop:
Finally, the painted black hoop is the perfect frame for the Kokeshi pockets that Tiffany at A Fabric Affair made for her sewing studio:

Finally, huh? The Stitch Fall 2011 Issue has been on the stands for weeks now, and I’m finally showing off the third project that I have in the magazine: The Cozy Wrap Bathrobe! (Things have been so busy here! More on that later, though.)
I love this robe! It’s designed to grow with your child, so there are just two sizes: toddler and child. It’s sewn with cotton french terry which is a knit, but it’s not very stretchy. Don’t be afraid at all if you don’t have much experience sewing knits! French terry is nice and absorbent without being too heavy, so it’s a perfect choice for wrapping up your little one fresh out of the bathtub. (In case you’re on the hunt for it, you can find that great owl french terry at The Fabric Fairy.)
I sewed up a fall robe for Jamie using the larger of the two sizes, and he’s happy to show it off to you!
You’ll have to pick up the magazine to find the instructions for this one. It’s available online at the Interweave Store (in paper or digital version) or you can find it at your favorite local fabric shop!
The Fall 2011 Stitch Magazine is due to be on the shelves of your favorite fabric store on Tuesday, and I have several projects included! (You can actually purchase the downloadable digital version in the Interweave Store already.)
Two of my projects are free web extras this time which means you can go grab them right now and sew! Both are projects designed for your sewing room. The Embroidery Hoop Pockets above are a great way to show off a few favorite fabrics and keep your sewing notions close at hand. Below, The Pretty Pattern Weights look beautiful holding your patterns and fabric in place while you trace or cut.
I have one more pattern in the magazine. I’m hoping my copy will come tomorrow, and I’ll share more about it then. As always, if you sew something from one of my designs, I’d love to see it! You can share in my Flickr group here: FD Flickr Pool or on the Fishsticks Designs Facebook page: FD Facebook.
The Comfy Sleep Set in sizes 18 months to 5T is all finished. My testers did a great job of working with me to get it just right! Here are some of their little models:
And this one totally cracks me up. It seems that while babies don’t seem to notice the crossover much, toddlers get quite excited by the “pocket” that the crossover creates and use it to carry around all their treasures!
You can find the pattern here: Toddler CSS Pattern. For the instructions, you’ll need to pick up a copy of the Spring 2011 Stitch Magazine at your local craft store, or you can purchase a digital copy of the magazine on the Interweave website.
All the entries–printed, cut apart and folded–ready to be chosen.
And, the winner is . . .
. . . Laura B of Lil Bean Baby! Congratulations, Laura! Laura is an amazing seamstress and her knitting is just incredible. You have to take a minute to go check out her blog. And, I happen to know that Laura is expecting a new little bean that the Comfy Sleep Set will be perfect for! Hmmm . . . I wonder if she’ll pick the Dino Dudes or the Mod Blooms interlock.
Oh, and you might have noticed that my helper for the drawing is wearing a Comfy Sleep Set in a bigger size. I have had quite a few moms ask if I could draft up sizes 18 months to 4T so that big brothers and sisters can have Comfy Sleep Sets, too. I checked in with Stitch, and they said they’d be happy for me to add the bigger sizes! I’m sure it’ll take me several weeks to get it done, but they’re coming. (This draft actually needs a little work–the neckline is bigger than I’d like it, and there are a few other little adjustments to be made. Jamie’s totally happy with it, though. He loves having Dino Dude pjs to match little brother, Charlie!)
I know you want to know who the winner is. There were 96 comments and 13 blog posts & Facebook links making 109 total entries. Random.org chose entry number 91. Entry number 91 is Sheila! Sheila is an online friend of mine and the owner of the incredibly innovative cloth diaper: Hiney Lineys.
Congratulations, Sheila! I can’t wait to see what you sew up with the Stitch magazine and the bacon and eggs cotton interlock.
Stitch Magazine Giveaway #2 is coming tomorrow morning, and if all goes well, the Comfy Sleep Set pattern download will be back up by then, too!
A few corrections needed to be made to the Comfy Sleep Set pattern download, so it’s unavailable for a little bit. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s back up. In the meantime, there are still a few days to enter my drawing for a copy of the Spring 2011 Stitch Magazine and all the fabric you need to make your own Comfy Sleep Set: Bacon & Eggs Comfy Sleep Set Giveaway.
Today, I thought I’d share a newborn set that I sewed up with the pattern. It’s a great set for a baby shower gift! In fact, this one was a gift for my friend, Jenna, for her new baby boy. Jenna let me steal him away for a few pictures so you can see the fit on a new baby.
This “little” guy weighed in at about 9 pounds, and he’s got plenty of growing room in this outfit. The combination of the stretchy knit fabric and the fold-up cuffs make this a set that you’ll get a long life out of!
Here’s the first of the collection of Comfy Sleep Sets that I have to show off. This cotton interlock is perfect for pajamas . . . even if the little guy wearing them is a bit away from eating eggs and bacon for breakfast!
The top in this set is so easy to pull on because of the criss-crossed top pieces, and the elastic-free waistband on the pants is great for comfortable snoozing.
This is the size 12 months on Charlie who wears between a 12 and 18 months in ready-to-wear clothes. You’ll have to excuse his poor little red nose. It seems that he’s been fighting a cold since winter settled in here.
Charlie’s wearing the pants over a medium AI2 cloth diaper in this picture, and the rise has enough room to cover the diaper well. (It does peek out a little when he squats down, but not enough that it would bother me at all.) The pattern fits perfectly over a disposable diaper, too.
On to my first Stitch Giveaway . . . everything you need to make your own Bacon & Eggs Comfy Sleep Set: one copy of the Spring 2011 Stitch Magazine with the pattern (and whole lot of other great projects), 3/4 yard of bacon & eggs cotton interlock and 1/4 yard of chocolate brown cotton/spandex rib knit for the trim pieces. To enter, just leave a comment here sharing your favorite thing about baby clothes. You can earn extra entries by posting on your blog or your facebook page about the giveaway, too. Just click on the Contact Me button right above my picture and send me the link to your post. This giveaway will end on Friday, 1/28/2011 at 10 p. m. central. The winner will be chosen by random drawing. Enjoy!
SQUEEEEEE! I might be a little excited. The new Stitch magazine is on the shelves! How do I know this? I know because I bought two copies at our local Hobby Lobby last night.
I have three more copies coming in the mail, too! Why would I want five copies of one magazine? Well . . . there’s this Comfy Sleep Set pattern in there. Isn’t it cute?
And that Comfy Sleep Set pattern? It has MY name next to it! SQUEEEEEEE!
Whew, I’m all good now. I promise to stop squealing at you. I am really excited about having a pattern in Stitch magazine, though. It’s such a fun and exciting new sewing magazine. If you haven’t checked it out, you really have to. There’s this really cute Comfy Sleep Set pattern in this issue . . . but there are lots of other great patterns in there, too. I’m already making a list of the ones that I want to sew.
I have some other Comfy Sleep Sets that I’ve sewn up ready to show off to you tomorrow, and I’ll have a giveaway, too . . . because, really, I don’t need five copies of the magazine. I’ll share!
