Chatting about Sewing Outerwear at GYCT

I’m visiting over at Get Your Crap Together today, sharing tips and ideas for sewing children’s outerwear. To check it out, just click on the picture above!

And, as a total aside, the more I look at that photo, the more it looks like Jamie is about to swat Charlie. I promise he was really about to hug him! (Not that that is always the case . . . )

Selfish Sewing Week – My Plan

Selfish Sewing Week starts today! Do you have a plan? What are sewing for YOU?! I’m at that slightly awkward point in pregnancy where you don’t really look pregnant, but nothing fits anymore. I’ve been using the rubberband-around-the-button-and-through-the-buttonhole trick to fasten my jeans, but honestly, I’d rather just hang out in yoga pants and a t-shirt. I am leaving for Quilt Market in four weeks, though, and I can’t go looking like I should be heading to the gym, right? I’m hoping to use the motivation from Selfish Sewing Week to make a couple of cute things that will look stylish and still be comfy.I ran across Sue’s version of Our Favorite Top from Tessuti on her blog, Quilt, Sew, Sew Sue, last week, and fell in love! The pattern is free, so I grabbed it right away and dug through my stash until I found this cotton candy pink stretch cotton jersey. I’m hoping to make it a few inches longer so that it’ll fit more like a tunic, but I’ll have to see how far I can stretch the fabric that I have on hand.Once I’d decided on my first project, I went hunting on Pinterest for other ideas and ran across the Leopard-Print Lola Dress at Ginger Makes. The pattern is from Victory Patterns. I love that it’s really a long sweatshirt with character! (Look at those great pockets!) Once again, I went to my stash and found this cute stretch french terry. (I thought I might ask you if you thought it was too “young” a fabric for 40-something me, but then I decided that I really didn’t want to hear that it might be! So . . . if it is, just don’t tell me. K? I just bought the cutest pink flats that are going to match it perfectly.)

So, that’s my plan for this week. Are you joining in? What are you sewing? Be sure to pop over to imagine gnats to find out how you can share and see what everyone else is up to! I’ll be back later this week to show off my progress.

Coming in 2014 . . .

It’s been almost two weeks since I’ve blogged! Eeek! I’ve actually been struggling to keep up with everything lately. My days are currently ruled by all-day nausea and the overwhelming need to just take a nap! There’s a really exciting reason for that, though!Someone with tiny fingers . . . . . . and tiny toes will be joining our family in the spring of 2014!Since Hopeful Threads is hosting a Create Hope Designs sew-along this month, I couldn’t resist sewing up a Watered With Love Layette Set for Baby #7 in this sweet organic cotton interlock from Birch Fabrics. I’m hoping that this will be the first of many outfits that I get to sew (and knit) for this little one! Right now, though, I have five weeks until Quilt Market, and I’m so far behind! If you don’t see me around here as much as usual, at least you’ll know why. (I’m probably sneaking off to eat something strange that I’ve been craving . . . like mashed potatoes . . . for breakfast.)

Aprons with a Dash of Love
A New Create Hope Designs Pattern!

Have you seen that Hopeful Threads is doing a Create Hope Designs Sew-Along this month? If you’re not familiar with CHD, I encourage you to go read the project announcement for this month — it’ll give you a great overview: September CHD Sewalong. Oh, and don’t miss yesterday’s post all about China Little Flower, the amazing organization that is supported by Create Hope Designs: Get to Know China Little Flower.

In honor of the sew-along this month, I thought I’d finish up a pattern that I’ve had in mind for a bit and donate it to Create Hope. Meet With a Dash of Love ~ Reversible Aprons for Mom & Her Little Helpers! This apron pattern includes three sizes — The Mom size which will fit moms from about size 4 to about size 16, the Big Kid size which fits little ones from about 7 to 10 and the Little Kid size for ages 3 to 6.The neckband is a simple no-fuss pull-over, and the apron can be sewn with cotton woven quilting fabrics or with waterproof fabrics. And, for those of us who love having two looks in one (or just want to be able to hide a spill when necessary), this apron is reversible! My testers did such a great job with this apron! Kelly sewed the cutest craft apron for her little guy with cotton laminate.Tania and Denise sewed the sweetest mother & daughter aprons. And, Ann made coordinating aprons for herself and her grandchildren. The little guy’s apron is a bit big, but is this not the sweetest picture? Ready to go grab the pattern and get sewing? The Jersey Love Blog Tour Day #8

We’re closing out the Jersey Love Blog Tour with two more amazing bloggers today! Shannon from Little Kids Grow has a Downtown V-Neck to share, and Max from Max California is showing off a pair of Runaround Pants! Shannon is a talented seamstress, a busy homeschooling mom to six (soon to be seven) and an inspired writer who shares her faith, her family and her sewing on her blogs, Little Kids Grow and Motivation Mondays. There are so many great tutorials at LKG — I love that Shannon has a way of putting together tutorials that allow you to take a simple pattern and make it something amazing! Check out Drafting a Shirt Collar, Adding a Single Piece Placket and the Peek-a-Boo Button Fly! The clothing that Shannon sews for her children has this amazing classic but modern feel to it, like these Princess Dreams Dresses for her twins or this Big Boy Style outfit for her little big boy. Shannon sews beautiful clothing for herself, too, like her stylish Ladder Skirt (which happens to have a tutorial, too)! For the Jersey Love Blog Tour, Shannon sewed a Downtown V-Neck for her son. You can see more by clicking the sneak peek picture below!Max (or Ari and sometimes, Adam West) is the unforgettable blogger behind Max California. Max has this geeky, modern, fun style that is sort of irresistible. (My 15-year-old crafting daughter and fellow comic book/sci-fi nerd adores Max’s blog!) Max has plenty of great little boy tutorials, like The Tuxedo Tee and The Robin Tee, and some sweet girl stuff, too — this upcycled Wanderlust Shirt from PR&P is amazing! Max sews great stuff for herself, as well. Love Star Wars? You have to see the12 Parsec Dress that she made for this year’s Make for Mom series. There are plenty of crafting ideas that aren’t sewing related, too. This Crayon Wall Explosion art piece is so cool! For the blog tour, Max sewed a pair of Runaround Shorts for her son, Vincent. The Jersey Love Blog Tour Day #7

The Jersey Love Blog Tour is speeding along! We’re all the way up to Day 7! Today, Laura from Crafty Hour and Suzanne from Winter Wonderings . . . Wanderings and Whatnot are each sharing TWO Jersey Love patterns sewn with Riley Blake’s Jersey Basics. (Between the two blog posts this morning, you’ll get to see all four Jersey Love patterns — how cool is that?)I started following Suzanne from W3 when she competed in Season 6 of Project Run & Play. I fell in love with the clothing that she designed for her twin boys! I think my favorite was the Collegiate Cool Look — love those red pants! Wait, though, maybe my favorite was Elephant Shoes? That hand-stamped elephant fabric is amazing! I also think it’s amazing that through the use of upcycled, donated and stashed fabric, Suzanne kept her PR&P spending under $20 for the entire season: The Cost of Competing! Suzanne sews for her daughter, too, and she has the cutest new tutorial for a dress made from cloth napkins: The Crumbcatcher Dress. She even occasionally sews something awesome for herself like this Ariadne (Not-a-Potato-Sack) Top.For the blog tour, Suzanne sewed two Downtown V-Necks and a pair of Runaround Pants for her boys. Laura is a long-time online friend who I met while sewing cloth diapers for my now 6-year-old. Laura’s blog, Crafty Hour, is only about a year old, and she’s doing amazing things with it! Laura makes beautiful quilts, like this Flannel Rail Fence Quilt and this Disappearing Nine Patch (a collaboration with several other quilters), both sewn as donations for her local Pregnancy Care Centre. Laura sews the sweetest outfits, like this Bubble Dress and this Piped Pocket Skirt, for her two-year-old daughter, Abigail. She also shares some brilliant ideas for fun kid stuff — be sure to check out the Curious Benjamin Birthday Party. And, Laura’s building a collection of great tutorials which include these very cool Quick Quilted Coasters and this Lined Zipper Pouch. For the blog tour, Laura sewed a Beachcomber Dress and a Carnival Skort! The Jersey Love Blog Tour Day #6

It’s Day 6 of the Jersey Love Blog Tour! Today, we’re visiting Caroline at Sew Can She and Suzanne at Making More with Less for their versions of the Runaround Pants and the Beachcomber Dress! My talented friend (and another of my nearby neighbors), Caroline, gathers tutorials from sewing bloggers around the world and shares a new one daily on the Sew Can She website. On her blog, though, she shares some pretty amazing tutorials of her own! Some of my personal favorites include this Quick Oilcloth Table Cloth, the Snappy Coin Pouch, the 3-Ring Zipper Pouch and this How-to for Sewing on Patches. She even has a super tutorial for How to Write a Super Tutorial! She also has a brand-new-to-her, beautiful Sewing Studio with a pretty cool story that you just have to go read to believe!Caroline sewed a pair of Runaround Shorts for her son. Go check them out by clicking on the sneak peek picture below.I “met” Suzanne and her sister, Alisa, years ago when I participated in their Mending Week challenge, and I’ve loved keeping up with them since. The two of them blog together at Making More with Less where they share beautiful sewing projects of all sorts! Their quilts are gorgeous, like this Going in Circles Quilt made by Alisa and this Cheerful Children’s Quilt sewn by Suzanne. Their other sewing projects are just as lovely, like this Wall Organizer and this sweet Bow Pillow complete with how-to tutorial! Occasionally, they share creative projects outside of sewing, too. Alisa’s Frugal Kitchen Transformation is a perfect (and impressive!) example. For the Jersey Love Blog Tour, Suzanne sewed two Beachcomber Dresses, one for each of her daughters. Welcome back to the second week of the Jersey Love Blog Tour! Kristy from Hopeful Threads and Vanessa from Designs by Sessa are up today with a pair of Runaround Pants and a Beachcomber Dress both sewn with those amazing Riley Blake Jersey Basics.Kristy from Hopeful Threads is not only an incredibly talented seamstress, but she’s one of the most generous people I know. Each month, Kristy runs a special project that encourages sewists from around the world to sew and give to various charities. This month, she’s collecting Pencil Pouches for the children of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her blog is packed full of fun and practical tutorials like the 2-minute Pencil Pouch (perfect for this month’s project), Big Daddy’s X-Large Oven Mitt, Whaley & Starla Stuffed Friends and the Pet Treat Pouch. I absolutely love Kristy’s Sewing Essentials Series that she uses to share her favorite indispensable sewing tools. I keep finding new things that I simple must try! Kristy also shares many of the projects that she completes for her own family, too, like this adorable I-Spy Quilt. Can you believe that it was her first ever completed quilt?!For the Jersey Love Blog Tour, Kristy sewed an adorable (and comfy!) pair of Runaround Pants for one of her little guys. You can check them out by clicking on this sneak peek picture:Vanessa shares her beautiful sewing along with peeks into her busy life as mom and foster mom on her blog, Designs by Sessa. I love this Chevron Applique Skirt — so sweet and so simple. And, these Vintage Sheet Mommy – Daughter PJ Pants? How can you resist such cuteness? I think my favorite thing on the Designs by Sessa blog, though, is The Porch Series. Vanessa invites talented sewing bloggers from all over to share a little bit of insight into who they are via conversations on the porch. You really have to go check it out!For her stop on the blog tour, Vanessa sewed up a Beachcomber Dress for her niece, and she even took pictures at the beach! Fishsticks & Jersey Love at Spring Quilt Market

The Jersey Love Blog Tour will be back tomorrow! We’ve got eight more amazing bloggers coming up this week. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few pictures from Spring Quilt Market a few months ago. I had planned to attend, but we had a last minute change of plans. Rachael from imagine gnats was so kind to take pictures for me! (Thank you, Rachael!) My Jersey Love patterns along with a few of my older patterns were featured in the Riley Blake booth.
